I've spent the last few days scanning hundreds of family photos into digital archives with this device. In general, I am very happy with it and it performs its functions. However, some basic points make me wish I had opted for a more expensive model. PROS: Auto resizing is perfect. No matter what I load in, from ticket stubs to documents to panoramic photos, it always recognizes it with no problems. Initial setup is quick and painless. Despite all the complaints about malware I've seen in all the reviews, I was able to quickly install the device setup software and nothing else without problems. - Although the software is poorly designed, it is very easy to learn and use. - Can scan document sets into single JPEG files, single-page PDF files, or multi-page PDF files. The latter option is very useful for creating managed archive sets. The capacity is decent, up to a maximum of 60 photos. There were no paper jams. As long as you're not reloading and uploading unscannable documents, it's not a problem. CONS: Color quality is terrible. I tried tweaking all sorts of settings related to auto-detecting color, brightness, contrast, etc. at 300dpi, but each of my scans produced extra darkness and washed-out colors. highest setting, 600 dpi, incredibly slow. 300 dpi would have been acceptable were it not for the color issues mentioned above. There are no options between 300 dpi and 600 dpi. Usage speed is a HUGE issue. Every time you want to change a setting, e.g. For example, color or duplex or single-sided, you need to open the software, select your scanner, click connect, select the scan mode, select the setting you want to change from the drop-down menu, save the change settings, and then close the program . This is incredibly time consuming, to the point where scanner speed is sacrificed. Changing certain settings with a button or a single click, auto-saving and/or allowing scanning while the software is open would easily solve this software usability nightmare. Absolutely obvious that Brother either doesn't have a quality control team or they saved a lot of money for it. Automated file naming conventions for scanning are extremely limited. You can set a static name that will automatically add the scan date or serial number. That's about it.-" This $275 scanner DOES NOT COME WITH A USB CABLE. Seriously? What %#*# did I just pay? Cheap for a car they just made hundreds of dollars on? Me can't run it right out of the box without my own gear? That's unacceptable stinginess and speaks volumes about how Little Brother cares about its customers. This $275 scanner DOES NOT COME WITH A USB CABLE. Serious? What %##*# did I just pay for?
