I bought this to keep a wifi hotspot in my RV so some of the devices I have in my RV are always connected to the network. I have a Roku and a couple of temperature sensors that need to be connected to the network, so it's easier to connect them to a Wi-Fi network every time I'm in a different location and want to use them. Instead of the supplied AC plug (household plug), this device can also be disconnected from the 12V mains plug. This allows it to run directly from the RV's batteries without being connected to an inverter or shore power, which is more efficient and much easier to manage when offline or on the go. Best of all, this device can remember the Wi-Fi networks you've connected to in the past and then automatically reconnect to them when you're back in range. So when I get home, it remembers my home WiFi network and reconnects automatically, or when I turn on the WiFi hotspot on my phone, it reconnects itself (sometimes it takes about 10 minutes to auto-scan and I've seen the networks, but that's not usually a problem as it's all done automatically, so by the time you've got everything set up on the site you're done). You can also plug in USB tethering or tether your phone this way if you prefer.
