Install the latest openwrt firmware

The router is great: fast and small. The only problem is that the manufacturer's firmware is based on Openwrt Chaos Calmer, which is three years old in 2020. When I installed the latest version of openwrt, the device started working much faster: the Lucy interface is much faster than the regular one. And I was able to install the latest software: afp protocol for Apple backups and drivers for external hard drives.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities

Too buggy to be useful

Wanted to like this router. I'm an IT professional and I've had nothing but problems. It has everything I need - small form factor, open source, VPN support for Wireguard. After 6 months of fighting this device and contacting GLI email support, this thing is going in the bin. Despite a great feature set and interface, it just doesn't work as advertised. Issues: Wireless network performance is less than 1MB/s for the 2.4GHz band on the default firmware. The newer "beta" firmware violates…

Best value for money among OpenWRT routers

I have bought at least 6 of these routers so far. Whenever a new router is needed, I buy another one. They are at my home, at my parents' house, at the office and in a few places where there is internet access. They work flawlessly for months and the only time they fail is when my ISP has a problem or when the power goes out. Why this and not another router? - It supports OpenWRT. If you know how to do that, it's recommended to update to the latest standard version of OpenWRT (not the one…

Works perfectly! suitable for router

I like this device, but I must say that this router may not be an easy setup for a layman. Follow the instructions and remember that Google is your friend. I never trust anyone else's WiFi; So when I visited a certain hotel, I made sure I had this router with me. For me, the initial setup was easy. Once you've bypassed the hotel's private portal (welcome screen) to connect to the WiFi, you're done. The great thing is that once you connect and create your personal network, all other devices can…

Works great as an extender for my hotspot

I bought this to use with a T-Mobile hotspot. I live in an area where internet resources are very limited - it's ASDL or satellite and both are expensive and very slow. I bought the T-Mobile M2000-4DE4 5G hotspot because I have 5G service and the cost of the service is much lower than all the options above. I needed a way to connect my Apple Time Capsule to my network so I could backup my Macs and also have a range extender. It took a bit of fiddling, but I finally got everything set up and…

Almost perfect for an RV

I bought this to keep a wifi hotspot in my RV so some of the devices I have in my RV are always connected to the network. I have a Roku and a couple of temperature sensors that need to be connected to the network, so it's easier to connect them to a Wi-Fi network every time I'm in a different location and want to use them. Instead of the supplied AC plug (household plug), this device can also be disconnected from the 12V mains plug. This allows it to run directly from the RV's batteries without

WiFi turns out good for routers

So, two main problems with this device. First WiFi breaks off. Very annoying to have to restart the router. Second, changes made through the web interface are not always implemented. It seems that the device freezes a little. It happened more frequently the first few days I had it, it's been a week now and it hasn't happened again, but it hasn't been necessary to make many changes since. The router was shipped in a large bubble envelope. Routers are pretty vulnerable devices so I'm not sure if…

I love this mesh system

I've had good luck with GL.iNet products in the past so I decided to give this mesh router a try. I bought 2 Revain GL-B1300 units. The first thing I did was update them to Praxis firmware (GA will be released soon). Connected them together and everything. I am actually replacing a $350 Asus RT-AC5300 wireless router with these 2 units. The only issue I had was with Asus shutting down and then restarting to reconnect to the internet. These little routers can handle the same load as my Asus. I…

Good hardware, very outdated stock firmware

First, the hardware itself is really good. Compact, powerful (for a consumer router), seemingly solid assembly. Second, they can charge nearly double the asking price for what you get, and it's still worth it. if they have updated their firmware. I was planning to downsize my router for use in the RV when traveling and I think this device would be perfect. I am currently using a 6 year old mini pc that I built with pfSense. Since I'll soon have to rebuild the Mini with a more modern processor…
