I don't think you should have expected anything better, but for a person with big knees, they roll like crazy. Wearing them flat on the knee is not an option. You will need to pre-fold the outer fabric and tighten the pads lower than you would like. However, I can at least wear them over my pants. They are elastic enough to stretch things. I've experimented with them a few times and they SHOULD protect my knees while falling straight down instead of forward. Haven't used them in sports yet as I'm waiting for my inline skates to arrive but I think they will do the trick. Anyway, fingers crossed. But I can't say I'm not disappointed with how they roll.
