Consider wireless remote control instead

If all your devices work well with the extender, you're good to go. If not, then it's a nightmare. I ended up switching to an RF remote and I love it. You should probably consider starting with an HF route instead of using a repeater. The URC RFS200 PowerPak Bundle with MasterControl RF20 and PowerBlaster is a good choice if you're willing to take the time to program it, but once installed it works much better for RF and emitter controlled package components. If you want an easy setup, get the much more expensive Logitech 915-000201 Harmony Ultimate Remote Customizable Touchscreen RF Controlled Enclosed Case - Black. Here's what can go wrong: Your TV emits a lot of light. Part of it is IC. If the TV emits too much IR noise, it can confuse the emitter, which ends up passing both signal and noise. Are there windows nearby? They also let IR noise through. Some components can ignore noise. My stereo worked perfectly. Comcast Scientific Atlanta cable boxes are notoriously sensitive to noise and will never function properly. Some DirecTV boxes also have problems. What color are your walls? White walls reflect more ambient noise than dark walls. What temperature is it now? The warmer, the more infrared radiation (this is how thermal imaging works). So what does that mean? Missed Signals. Thus, the cable box does not turn on when it should. Or it stays on because it missed the shutdown signal. Or you can press the play button after fast forwarding and the box will continue to fast forward your show. Or the box simply does not receive a signal, and to use it you need to open the cabinet doors. I know, first world issues, but this is seriously annoying. I've tried everything. Masking tape on components. masking tape on the sensor. Multiple spotlights. Sunglasses over the illuminators to filter out IR noise. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't, but the problem of unreliability kept coming back. Then I got the RF remote and it's perfect. Everything reacts immediately. No missed signals. Do not point the remote control at the transmitter. It just works. Cables 2 Go helped a lot but in the end there was nothing they could do. They expressly point out that plasma screens can interfere, although I have an LCD.

Pros
  • It's amazing
Cons
  • Almost everything is available
