I was replacing the starter on a John Deere LA 115 self propelled mower for the first time. While not easy, removing the old one was a learning curve. Removing the hood was the hardest part. After that, removing the old starter was easy. I once bought a size 30 torx bit. Warning: Be sure to carefully disconnect the solenoid cable and tape the end with tape to keep it from touching the chassis. Also remove the negative terminal of the battery. Took me a few days - I'm a bit of an engine repair enthusiast. The upside is I probably saved about $200 by doing it myself. You can do it too!
