Pros: Seems to be of good quality (stronger than its predecessor) Easy to install. Reasonable price. Disadvantages: many variants of the same part. You MUST check the specs with your existing starter.

This starter starts my almost 20 year old Scotts 1742 lawn tractor like new and performs better than the one I bought from my local authorized John Deere dealer. The dealer gave me one that had a lot of teeth which was nylon/plastic and you could see where they got stuck in the flywheel when I took it off. So I decided to try this starter and not go back to the dealer.

Okay I'll hook up the Revain Waterhouse first as I bought it from them. It was in perfect condition and a little cheaper. So feel free to order from them. Second, it will NOT fit the John Deer L120 which was said to fit. That's the right starter, but the wrong bendix. The gearing is very good, but not the teeth. I've seen several bad reviews for this product, which isn't always fair. Note that the "compression camshaft" in Briggs engines often fails, resulting in starter or battery failure. Don't be like me - before you change the starter, remove the spark plug and see if the engine starts. Then the starter is ok and you need a new camshaft. Replacing a camshaft is a moderate repair that most painters can handle. There are many videos on YouTube that explain the process.
