How it works

I hope this review helps someone. I have a rented apartment where the renter has allowed their dog to pee between the front door and the front door. When you opened the storm door, the smell of urine hit your face. A little background on urine smell: The urine smell from dogs and cats is because their urine contains something called urea. Bacteria eat this urea, and the by-product is the urine smell we all know and hate. They mainly eat urea and vomit the smell of urine. That's why it stinks more when it's wet. This is because it's humid and the humidity allows more bacteria to grow, which eat more and smell stronger. There are three ways to deal with this. The first is with flavors. Smells either overwhelm the smell of bacteria or add smell to it and turn it into something else. Secondly by enzymes. Enzymes are like bacteria, they feed on urea but don't give off the smell of urine as a byproduct. With enzymes, however, they can only do their work as long as it is wet. Once the area dries out, the enzymes die and stop working. If there is urea left there, bacteria will multiply and the odor will return. You can try to keep the area moist while the enzymes do their job, but then you risk mold. The third way to deal with urine smell is this product. This is an antibacterial agent. So it just kills the bacteria for a while. When the bacteria are dead, they cannot feed on urea and therefore cannot smell like urine. However, over time, the antibacterial properties wear off and bacteria start growing again, and the odor eventually returns. This is a great new way to stop odors. In my case it didn't work at all. A new coat of paint solved the problem. The encapsulation of urea prevents bacteria from reaching it. Understand that the only way to get rid of urine smell permanently is to get rid of urea. To do this you need either bacteria to eat it or enzymes to eat it. It has to eat something.
