The charts didn't help, but I can't translate charts from 2D to 3D under any circumstances. My husband, whose mom has worn one since he was little, quickly got the hang of it and when he explained what to do (basically you have to pull the main pole all the way into the core mechanism to place the apples on and use - seems like it is exactly as written in the instructions but whatever), it was the easiest to use and absolutely brilliant. Our daughter loves apples and was thrilled when I sliced her a peeled spiral-skinned apple to eat on her own (she calls it apple ramen). Everything works exactly as it should - the core came out perfectly, the spiral cuts are perfectly even and the shell came off completely in one piece. I had to adjust the depth of the skin a few times to only peel the skin and not the apple chunks, but with the lamb nuts it's very easy to adjust. It cleans in seconds with soap and water. And the clip that secures it to the tabletop is easy to open and close and holds it in place perfectly with a tension rod. It was an amazing find and we're all hooked (now that I know how to use this)!
