Pepperoni in lard doesn't deter birds, but it definitely deters squirrels. After not one, not two, but three squirrels were on top of all that fat (even hanging upside down from a star hook), my conclusion was that there was zero pepper in those greasy cakes. Also, the texture was different than other pepper tarts I've used and they seemed to fall apart/fall apart much quicker than other brands. Don't waste money. You can buy three quality suet brownies for the same price at your local bird supply store.
