Salo with pepperoni is good for birds

Salo with pepperoni is excellent. The birds peck and enjoy the treat, but the squirrels don't. I saw a squirrel climb up and gnaw. Didn't stay long and didn't see the squirrel return.

Pros
  • Always liked it
Cons
  • No show

Woodpeckers love it

Most Salo products have 1 to 5 star ratings. I took a stab at this lard, and downy woodpeckers love it. We have a lard feeder that repels rodents and large birds, so grackles and mockingbirds are unhappy. Even the red-bellied woodpecker could stick its big beak in and eat some of it. He liked it too.

Birds love it, but not critters!

Birds love this spicy pepper fat, mostly lots of crested mouse, tits and a few wrens and house finches, nuthatches. If we use a different flavor of bacon then at night we have seen the creatures (possums, raccoons) climb onto the feeder and eat it overnight. Not so with this pepperoni and the birds love it!

Unfortunately the squirrels liked it!

Pepperoni in lard doesn't deter birds, but it definitely deters squirrels. After not one, not two, but three squirrels were on top of all that fat (even hanging upside down from a star hook), my conclusion was that there was zero pepper in those greasy cakes. Also, the texture was different than other pepper tarts I've used and they seemed to fall apart/fall apart much quicker than other brands. Don't waste money. You can buy three quality suet brownies for the same price at your local bird…

Repels squirrels and attracts woodpeckers. a daily source of joy

I can't say enough good things about this product. I have a lard cake hanging near my home office and enjoy watching the birds it attracts every day. I have found that repelling squirrels is good. Squirrels sometimes take multiple bites, never to come back. But the birds seem to like it. I get regular daily visits from downy woodpeckers, wrens and dark-eyed juncos, and sometimes the fire-bellied woodpecker. And my favorite of all, a few Northern Flickers that return every day. I even set up a…

Few squirrels eat

I leave my tallow feeder hanging on the fire escape and most of the birds it feeds are native house sparrows. Although they are "just house sparrows" I enjoy watching them eat as they cannot hold on to a basket like downy and tits. They gather and do well; No wonder they were able to establish themselves so easily in North America. And it's especially fun to watch them feed their young. In any case, of course we also have a lot of squirrels and once they find a feeding spot the squirrels can be
