I leave my tallow feeder hanging on the fire escape and most of the birds it feeds are native house sparrows. Although they are "just house sparrows" I enjoy watching them eat as they cannot hold on to a basket like downy and tits. They gather and do well; No wonder they were able to establish themselves so easily in North America. And it's especially fun to watch them feed their young. In any case, of course we also have a lot of squirrels and once they find a feeding spot the squirrels can be gone in less than 24 hours and the birds get little if anything. So I was happy to learn about lard. It works out! Sparrows (and the occasional fluffy chickadee or nuthatch) like it just as much as regular lard. The problem, at least with urban squirrels, is that some of them are so used to eating whatever they are used to. So there's a squirrel or two near my house that will eat it as soon as they find it. It seems like the only thing they consistently avoid is C&S.
