This is my first set of waterstones and while it's a great deal for a fully featured set there are some issues of use that seem built in. Being new to this field I may still be in the learning process but this is what I have found so far. Waterstones should be ground and buffed on any grit with a slurry that builds up from loose particles as you sharpen. This set is well graded in grit, but the higher grit (3000 and 8000) are too hard, not enough particles come off the stone when moving. So instead of creating a suspension of fine particles, they wear away the metal filings that fill the pores of the stone, requiring frequent work with leveling stones to expose the sand. Maybe I'll find a trick when I have more experience with the set. If so, I'll add it to this post. Note that I sharpen planes and chisels, not knives, in case that matters. I also recommend that you seal the bamboo stand they give you. It sticks firmly to the stone and has a good non-slip backing, but the bamboo is very porous and mine has started to mold. I have impregnated it with tung oil which penetrates and seals in and is also mildew resistant. The straightening rod is great and I use it a lot and also use the back as a rough sharpening rod to adjust the angle of the tool. The cleaning stone (white block) is also very useful and a great addition to a full set of stone care tools.
