I have an RCA cable modem with RCN as ISP. Excellent service which I highly recommend. To set up a wireless network at home, I bought a Linksys G router after buying an HP laptop. Everything worked fine for me, but then I started having frequent drops in bandwidth and persistent connectivity issues with other computers on my network. I mistakenly thought it was the router. Fool that I was! After countless attempts to restart the modem, WPA keys, etc., I finally found out that the modem cannot support the wireless router. I also found the modem had shorted out, also the RCA didn't carry it anymore and the thing was ugly and taking up space. I have since got a Linksys modem (BEFCMU10) and installed it with a WRT54G router and it works fantastic! Be sure to call your ISP and provide your modem's MAC address and/or serial number to connect to the network. Otherwise YOU WILL NOT CONNECT. My ISP connected me to work within 5 minutes. Also, some ISPs give you a discount if you provide your own modem. Check it.
