I had 196,000 miles on my 2007 Subaru Forester. During my trip from California to Texas, a strange noise came from the back of my car. Noise levels varied with speed, becoming loudest at around 55 mph. When I got to Texas, I was able to lift the back of the car and spin the wheels, which allowed me to feel the roughness in the wheels' motion. I removed both rear wheel hubs and swapped the original wheel bearings from ball to cone. It's nice and quiet now. NOTE: Timken bearings are now made in China instead of the USA. I don't know if the quality has changed.
