Many other reviewers mentioned how different even a set of five panels could be, and they were right. After sanding them all down, some absorbed stain like a sponge, others, I had to do multiple passes to get the same result. I would not recommend using this for direct-to-surface art, if you're planning on making a set. Not good for that. For that alone, I'm knocking off a star. This should not be advertised as an alternative to canvas for that alone.I, however, used this for an incredibly different job. I needed 9-10" wide, small shelves for a very very odd, low traffic part of my house. The equivalent amount of custom cut ply, or other manufactured woods, would have cost so much more money. Here, I stained these panels, just to cover the defects (at least, most of them). And the 5/8" deep, 7/8" wide frame was more than enough for some Elfa melamine shelf brackets. They're solid, and thanks to the frame, I know this will do the job, and probably last a while. I'm stoked. I can finally utilize the space.
