Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Hakko FX601-02 Temperature Adjustable Soldering Iron with Control by David Everett

Very good but not quite perfect

This is the second stained glass we have purchased for our stained glass group here at Oak Hammock CCRC. We got the first one and everyone wanted to use it instead of the big Weller 80's. It is much lighter and heats up very quickly. Solderes perfectly, and the ability to adjust the temperature with a simple knob on the handle allows you to work well even with thick wire or zinc frames. But it does have a few annoying downsides: 1. The power cord is very stiff and heavy, and always seems to snag on the corner of your desk or whiteboard, or knock over flux containers if you're not careful. Switching to a lighter line would be a very big improvement. This cord contrasts so well with the very light weight of the iron itself.2. The temperature dial on the handle is too flat and difficult to grip. This, along with the difficulty of turning, creates irritation when you want to raise or lower the temperature. I'm not sure if the temperature settings calibration is consistent. For the first device we bought a 360ยฐC setting. This is normal with foil soldering, but the second time around, the same setting barely melted the solder. Despite these issues, it's still our group's favorite piece of hardware.
