Review on Prime Line KC17HD Safety Spring Closer by Corey Listner

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Suitable for lighter doors with minimal use, with limitations

This device is a little different from traditional "door closers" but can be used with some limitations. First, it MUST be installed in a ROBUST location. Because of the narrow width, there is a HUGE amount of tension in a small area. If it's not securely fastened, it just comes loose. Also, this item is only for EASY doors! I tested it on a typical front door and to get it to work you have to push (pull) the inner spring too hard! In other words, if used on a heavy door, it won't last long. TIP: This thing comes dry (no lube on it). It's a spring that twists/unwinds with use and if left unlubricated will break. I used a spray of lithium grease and applied as much as I could to the internal springs. This makes a huge difference in the performance of the product and certainly increases its durability/lifespan. The plastic part that comes with the device (the part that is placed on the door for the locking bar to ride on) is useless! It starts to wear out immediately and wears out almost completely in a week of use! I replaced it with a small strip of polished steel. Best Use: This closer is best suited for lightweight doors or in areas where other, more durable types of door closers will not fit. Final Word: This closer should be fully lubricated prior to installation. Use it on lighter doors that see minimal use to extend the life of the unit. Make sure it is installed very tightly/securely and be careful when "winding" the spring.
