This is a surprisingly simple device and I enjoyed using it. The default setting is 1 spark per revolution, which is suitable for most lawnmowers, EVEN THOUGH they are 4-stroke. .Because they have a magnet (which creates a spark) on the flywheel, both 2-stroke and 4-stroke small engines produce a spark once per revolution. Simply wrap the end of the wire around the spark plug wire. Make about 5 loops and check the display screen. I recommend finding a way to keep the wire wrapped tightly. Maybe use tape or some zip ties. I only used them for a few minutes and ran diagnostics on my mowers to confirm the RPMs. I don't use it as an hour meter because I don't want to install it permanently. For less than $15, this is an impressive instrument, but its resolution is only about 40 RPM. So it jumps from 2960 to 3000 RPM, but the true RPM can be anywhere from 2940 to 3020. Pretty minor bug, but worth mentioning.
