The cap is unthreaded; It can best be described as a bayonet lock: attach, turn 1/4 turn and you're done. Nothing beats a bayonet lock for quick access. Is the bayonet safe? Well, I regularly fill it up with ice water and either tea or coffee, shake the crap out and - nothing, not a single drop comes out. I have to say if you're not careful you can put the lid on the wrong way around - obviously at an angle - and it will leak, so be careful. Please note that the cap's water resistance depends on the cap's easily removable silicone liner. I hope Keith has a spare lid insert.
