Works pretty well! on Rough Plumbing

This 25ft serpentine auger rigid autofeeder worked pretty well. You can use the included crank to operate it, or a portable hand drill, which is much easier. However, for this to work, a modification of the product was required. It turned out that the clog in the drain pipe was more than 25 feet away, but I didn't know that when I bought the Rigid unit. I ended up having to make the serpentine snail longer to get the job done and this review explains how I did it, including photos. The kitchen sink drain system in our newly purchased 12 year old house was clogged (water didn't drain everywhere). The clog wasn't in the P-trap plumbing under the sink (which I checked). Instead, it was somewhere in a 32-foot drain pipe that ran through the walls and underground to the main system's external drain, but at first I wasn't sure where. 32 feet into the drain pipe. The hard auto feed worked fairly well up to 25 feet. The auto feed (and auto rotate) really helped get the snake around elbows etc (which I couldn't do by pushing the snake in by hand). But the tough 25ft snake couldn't reach the clog and the drain was still clogged! So I looked around for a 50ft Auto Feeder but couldn't find one for a reasonable price (Rigid and Super-V make one, but it's in the $300-$500 range). In desperation, I opened up the Rigid Autofeeder to see how it worked and found that the snake body could probably accommodate a longer (1/4" diameter) snake. I have a 50 foot long 50HE1 Flexi Core Found and bought "Drain Cleaner Cable" from General Wire Spring ($60 at Revain). The full 50 feet didn't fit in the hard block so I had to shorten it to 37 feet and then it fit. First I tried the to fit a full 50 feet but I couldn't fit the last 13 feet in so I knew where to cut. And it was difficult to cut it with a hacksaw but I managed in the end. Attaching the end in The hard plastic case was also tricky as the cut end didn't expand to a larger diameter than the original (see photo, enlarged image) But in the end I fixed it securely, closed the case and got a new long S coiled. I also marked the end of the snake with a permanent marker before winding it so I'll know when I've reached full length while using it. Well that worked! The Rigid Auto Feeder with 37ft snake reached the clog and killed it! Incidentally, the 50HE1 Flexi Core snake was the same diameter (1/4 inch) and significantly more durable (stronger and stiffer) than the original Rigid. Line. So I think it was better to push through and break the blockade. Rigid should consider increasing the snake body to accommodate a longer snake and also choose a stronger snake. In the end the snake ate the clog and I'm happy. Also, I now have a more powerful tool for future blockages.
