UPDATE: After thinking about this incident for a while I thought it might actually be MY fault the reader got roasted. Folks, be very careful when unplugging a USB device like this - don't just pull it out of the slot. Use the system tray icon to "Safely Remove Hardware". I'm usually VERY careful with this, but it's possible I've been careless in my efforts to get the reader to work. So please take this into account. My other comments on slots in the reader still stand. ***** I bought one of these readers for my parents when I was visiting them on vacation. It worked ONCE, then not anymore. Windows says the USB ports are working properly and I've tried reinstalling the software that came with it, but it just doesn't work anymore. The light comes on, but it doesn't recognize the card and doesn't show up as a drive, even though Windows says it has a USB storage device attached. Eventually, Windows reported that the device was defective and not working properly. I'm familiar with computers and have gone through the standard troubleshooting process. Restart: check. Reinstall: check. SanDisk website: check. Updated USB port drivers: check. Not joy. It's dead as a doornail and I'm returning it to the seller for a refund. As a side note, the Memory Stick slot is inconvenient and difficult to insert the card properly. Not that I ever had a chance to know if it was really correct as the device stopped working before. I will not buy another SanDisk card reader.
