Review on Authentic African Mopani 🌳 Wood for Zoos and Large Enclosures by Tina Vaughn

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great but what you get is very different from the picture and description

I ordered this for my 70 gallon tropical freshwater aquarium to improve the look and also to help control the pH down to a more neutral value. . I also wanted a piece of driftwood, that would be natural. The piece I received was relatively smaller than the sizes in the description (I also ended up ordering a jumbo size which was much larger). I couldn't find a pot big enough to boil this, so I just poured hot water into a large plastic pot and changed the water several times a day for 2 weeks. By this point, many of the tannins had already washed out, but this continued after I put them in the tank. It certainly helped bring the pH down from 7.8 to around 7.0 and has now stabilized. The "black water" effect I had in my tank due to tannin washout was pretty decent and gave it a more natural flow look, but I had to do more frequent water changes to keep the water from getting too dark. Finally, I added activated charcoal to my filter to nourish the tannins that clarified it. By the way, this wood is VERY heavy (due to its density, which is why it sinks so easily). If there was a way to see what exactly you got beforehand I would give that 5 stars.

Pros
  • Hands free operation
Cons
  • Very expensive
