Purchase experience and regret

I received my Nespresso machine this week and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to set up and use. Unlike my previous Keurig, which took hours to clean to get rid of the plastic smell and taste, my new Vurtuo only needed a quick rinse and I was ready to brew my first cup. My first impression was maybe too much foam. And when I finally got to the coffee, I found something that tasted more like flavored hot water than a cup of strong, good tea. I wasn't new to Nespresso having had a cup or two at their bra shop. It was during our trip to Paris that I first discovered its wonderfully frothy texture and rich flavor. But it had none. After trying a few more pods over the next few days, I decided to consult Mr. Google. It turns out I can easily adjust the amount of water and foam by programming the brew time. But what I couldn't do was improve the taste. I just didn't bother to choose. And because they block 3rd party capsule providers I only have the options they offer. Another thing that put me off is the amount of caffeine in each capsule. Capsules for previous machines ranged from 55-65 mg for espresso and 77-89 mg for lungo. Vurtuo uses new 110mg espresso and 165mg coffee pods! (Much more than your typical energy drink, which explains why I got dizzy after my second cup later in the day.) Finally, I read the reviews complaining about the temperature. The temperature was ideal when there was a slight delay between pouring and drinking. However, if you leave it on for too long, or prefer to blow on your coffee for 15 minutes before bending your elbow, this might not work for you.

Pros
  • Hands free operation
Cons
  • Very expensive
