Review on πŸ”§ Searon Tach Hour Meter Tachometer Maintenance for Small Engines: Motorcycle, Marine, Boat, ATV, Snowmobile, Generator, Mower by Peter Tennant

Suitable tool for occasional use of small engines. Not exactly for professional use though

I bought this Searon Model SRT-32R Tachometer primarily to tune some of the smaller engines on my personal lawn equipment such as a ride on tractor, rotary cultivator and string trimmer. Like most people reading this review, I first did some online research to determine the best overall value for my needs before finally settling on this model, which I felt was the best for my intended application is. To that end, I am very pleased with the functionality and value offered by this particular tachometer. Unfortunately, I don't have any other equipment available to verify the accuracy of the actual readings from this tachometer. That being said, the readings seem pretty accurate based on how the engines are running and ringing to my ears at the various RPMs displayed on the tachometer. I work a lot with small motors, so I usually have a pretty good idea when something sounds like it's not working as it should. Interestingly, I found that most small engine specialists tune the engines they work on this way. by ear and even without using a tachometer. The large numbers on the backlit LCD screen are fairly easy to read from a few feet away, which I find especially handy when working on fine-tuning the engine and also trying to salvage the tachometer itself. at a safe distance from all moving parts of the engine. The long speedometer cable makes it suitable for wrapping around spark plug cables to measure the speed. but sometimes I find it a bit difficult to hold that wire so tight to the wire that it doesn't want to unwind and then maybe that's why it gives inaccurate readings. As a workaround, I just use some tape to temporarily secure the wire to the spark plug wire for a short time when I'm actually using the tach to measure. The tachometer housing is plastic, presumably to reduce the overall weight for those who are concerned. While the plastic construction seems fairly adequate, I wish the general build quality was a bit more solid. I personally hate spending good money on a tool that in many ways feels like a child's toy when you don't know any better. All of this makes me wonder how well this speedo will hold up over time. I'm not saying the wheelbarrow's design is absolutely terrible, but I wish the manufacturer had put a little more effort into making this thing a little more powerful, rather than going the cheap and easy route to maximize their own profits. The round plastic battery cover on the back of the tachometer is nothing more than a small round piece of thin, threaded plastic that strikes me as quite brittle and easily broken if not careful. I just try to be very careful when opening and closing the battery cover with a short screwdriver. There's also no seal on the battery cover, so this can be an obstacle for those wanting to semi-permanently attach this tach to devices that stay out in the rain and snow. I like that the battery used in this particular speedometer is easy to buy from a store if it ever needs to be replaced. After each use, to extend battery life, I simply pry them out of the speedometer by gently prying them out of the battery holder with a very small, narrow screwdriver, which is actually pretty easy. The battery is pulled out without much effort. While researching tachometers I've noticed that the vast majority of them, oddly very similar to this one, don't have a removable battery, so the fact that there is one was a huge plus for me and the main reason I got it bought . .To sum it up, I find this tachometer perfect for my occasional DIY needs and I would probably buy it again based on its overall cost and my own specific needs. However, someone looking for a powerful, professional-quality tool should look elsewhere.
