Sidewall issues cause cracking under braking

I like the way these tires roll. However, when they thinned the sidewalls compared to the GP 4000, they created a problem that made the tires unusable for me. I've had two broken sidewalls on tires that were under 200 miles. I thought the first tire was bad so I replaced it with a new GP 5000 and the same thing happened again. Both ejections occurred while braking downhill from a relatively steep slope. I weigh about 200 pounds and mostly use the front brake to slow down when needed. My theory is that under braking, strong longitudinal forces are created at the intersection of the tire and bead, eventually causing the gap to start right next to the bead. As soon as the gap becomes large enough, the tube pops out and ejection occurs. Needless to say, it's a scary moment when you're going 15-20mph down a steep hill and there's a loud bang and your tire goes all the way down in the blink of an eye. I was able to stop safely both times, but I don't want to risk it a third time. As far as I can tell, there was no reason for the flatness other than a design weakness. The tire was inflated to 100lbs and my Mavic Kysrium SL rim is fine where the rupture occurred. I have never had a sidewall crack like this in my last 10,000 miles with this rim on a variety of tires.

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • It's ok
