In agreeing with past reviews of this gate, it definitely accomplishes the very tricky task of blocking the top of stairway when you have a bannister on one side and a solid wall on the other. No other gate that we found could accomplish this. Since bannisters vary so much, it's impossible to make a "one size gate fits all". The velcro goes around the bannister securely and the tightening screws are a big help (careful, we ripped the first velcro by over-tightening). Like others who had to get "creative" when installing this gate, we had to flip the wall connectors upside-down in order to raise the gate up off the floor enough to align with the proper parts of our bannister. Set aside a good hour or more to do your customizations. Also careful to close the gate each time since leaving it swinging open could cause someone to catch it, opening it so far backwards that the plastic clips around the bannister could snap off - then the game will be over! So far after a month of use, it is doing the trick. We don't go through the gate except for a couple times a day. We really had no choice unless we wanted to drill holes in the woodwork. The metal gate has a nice white finish and feels hefty enough in your hand to not feel cheap. My 80 year old mother in law doesn't seem to have any trouble opening and closing it, after a little practice. Nice to have peace of mind with our little ones not flying down the staircase.March 2013 Update: The gate is still working fine. Nothing has broken off. I'm still glad I bought it and it was worth the hassle to modify things a bit to make it fit. My goal was to NOT drill holes in my oak banister, and we didn't have to.
