my duct seal works fine, old marine goop works fine. but foam + water doesn't give a good picture for some reason. The plus is that I can just take it out and test it directly in the water to make sure it works. But I fill it up with water and it just pushes in well. And then I see erratic, alternately weird signals when I can't tell the depth. I really wanted this to work but ended up doing Ductseal + Vaseline and it was reliable. Another plus is that I don't have to add water, which I didn't spend much time on anyway. It holds water so that's a plus. My plastic kayak might have a different density than water or something, but is it closer to the channel seal?
