While radio receiver circuitry plays a role in reception, your reception ultimately depends on the strength of the signal or how far you are from the transmitter. AM radio transmission has a longer range than FM because it is a lower frequency and you can receive stations that are far away at night. So don't blame the radio if you're out of range of your station. One more thing about approval. The antenna above is for VHF only. An AM antenna is a coil of wire inside, so move the radio around for better AM reception and that will help. I also like that it has a tuning light. I haven't seen any of them in a long time. If the signal is good, the light will turn on. They first appeared in old radios from the 1930s as a tuning aid. There's not much noise when you tune the range, and neither during volume adjustment, which is a good sign of quality circuitry. I've always been lucky with Panasonic.
