I needed something to block the stairs so my old dog wouldn't try to climb them again. Their hind legs can no longer support their weight and it is dangerous for them to walk down stairs. This gate is more of a mental barrier than a physical one. Our staircase has a wall on one side and a round railing on the other so the airtight gate doesn't work and I didn't want to install any hardware to make this work great. If your dog has the strength or will, he can easily knock the gate over. This is a light wood that does not withstand any load. But for an old dog who just needs a reminder that the stairs aren't worth the effort, it helps.
