Review on πŸ“Έ Bower SFD728C: Enhancing Canon E-TTL II with TTL Autofocus Flash by Erik Haynes

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The cheapest Canon TTL autofocus you will find anywhere.

As other reviewers have pointed out, it's not up to Canon's $200 equivalent and has a plastic protector. But if you take it out to photograph the dog and grandkids at home, it should do the job just fine. 99% of the time I use it to deflect light from the ceiling to bring more natural light into my home. It also seems to have a decent range, so I'm looking forward to trying it out at my next wedding where the lights are dimmed and you can't get that close to the happy couple. If you're a professional photographer or shooting on safari you might want something more durable, but if you just want a fully functional external flash that flips, swivels and auto-focuses the lens with your Canon DSLR (I have a T3, Bottom of Canon DSLR range), this should do the job. Update May 4, 2013: I now have the ability to actually use the flash. The plastic base with the locking wheel didn't cause any problems, the flash stays in place. It seems to accurately assess how much light needs to be transmitted when used directly, with no reflection, I'm happy with that result. Although I haven't tested it in a large, dimly lit room to see if it can get the job done. Don't use it in brightly lit places with the new CLF energy-saving bulbs where the flash is rarely needed. I was reflecting the light from a 5 bulb chandelier and all my photos came out very yellow and I had to Photoshop each one to bring back the natural look. After that I did a test and not opening the flash head or using the built-in flash instead would give better results in this environment.
