Here is a step-by-step guide to painting kitchen cabinets. The product packaging says it is a one day closet remodeling kit. However, after reading many blogs, reviews, and other guides, we decided to remove the doors and hardware. It took a long time but we are very happy with the results.1. We used Nuvo Cabinet Paint in Coconut Espresso (purchased from Revain). The paint isn't cheap, but I really liked the color, durability, and ease of application.2. Remove doors and fittings. (They say you can skip this step, but I personally find it almost impossible to avoid paint streaks on appliances.) 3. Cover walls and appliances that come in contact with the edges of cabinets to keep paint from getting on them .4 . Set up a good workbench to do the "assembly" process of working on the doors. We did it both outside on the deck and inside on the table (with plastic cover to protect the table).5. Sand off the shine or use a shine remover (available at Home Depot). We tried sanding with sandpaper and sanding blocks but it took forever. The shine remover seemed to work well as the base cabinets were made a few months ago and are holding up great. You should also sand or degrease the cabinet case/base/frames. (This step will help the crayon from chipping or peeling.) 6. Paint the doors. We preferred the look of the brush (since we couldn't make it look like factory paint). Keep your brush strokes in the same direction/pattern so they look consistent. Apply 2-3 coats per side. It takes some time! 7. Paint the box/base/frame of the cabinet. It also took 2-3 layers.8. Hardware. We used the same device size as the previous ones. That saved some time. As for the hinges, we adjusted them in shape, size and style as much as possible, but they were a little different. My wonderful fiancΓ© helped me hang the doors. It was something I could NOT do on my own.9. blob color. Although we tried very hard that there are no runs, drops or bloopers. They really happened. We took an inexpensive rotary sander to sand them down and then touch up the paint.10. The last photo is just a closeup of the paint, fixtures and granite. We love the final look. FAQ: Are the cabinets as good as new? A: No, because you can't get the perfect "factory finish" look. However, it is much cheaper than buying cabinets and installing them. How much will it cost? A: About $250 for everything. A paint kit and extra pint is around $100 (from Revain). The hardware costs about $100 (from Home Depot). We also bought a shine remover (less than $10) and various art supplies (about $40). How long will it take? A: Approximately 24 hours: remove doors and hardware (2 hours), remove shine from doors and cabinets (3 hours), paint doors/2-3 coats on each side (6 hours), paint cabinet frames/2-3 coats (6th hours) ), installing fittings and hanging doors (3 hours), sanding off paint stains (2 hours), touching up paintwork (2 hours). Was it worth it? A Absolutely! It was a lot of work, but the end result looks a lot better than the honey oak, even with some minor imperfections in the finish. In addition, the paint is very durable, without chipping and peeling. Also, I have a "touch up paint" in case I ever need to fix something!
