I've fitted four Edison LEDs and am very happy. I think any LED will work just fine but I liked the look of the Edison and wanted good light output so this was a way of getting 4 8 watt bulbs into a socket and getting over 1600 lumens from the largest LED bulb , which I haven't found anything else (which I didn't like visually). I also use them on a dimmer and have no problem dimming all 4 bulbs. If you're using incandescent bulbs I can see this thing getting hot and it would probably be impractical to use more than 4 x 40w bulbs. It's actually an LED, although with so many options these days it's hard to find a reason not to even factor in the cost.
