In my Audio A4 (2013) it is plug and play. Unfortunately my car has a 2Gen system so I need the power cable but I just route it to the rear seat adapter so it's almost invisible. This handy little device gives me what my car should have by default: when I start the car, it connects instantly and my Android's music and audiobooks start playing through the sound system. Best $33 I've spent in a long time. I'll update this review if things get bad, but for now I'm very satisfied.
