If you really want to go the DIY route I would definitely recommend something else. For example, metal CO2 generators from FZONE or ZRDR. They allow integration of solenoid valves, have bubble counters and on average produce more CO2 than themselves. I used mine for a week before the diffuser broke. My diffuser seemed to be clogged, so I soaked it in bleach overnight, then soaked it in dechlorinator and placed it in the aquarium, but it still didn't diffuse properly. So I could buy a whole new diffuser for $17, but then I would have to use all the gas produced in the system to remove the old diffuser. It doesn't make economic sense, something like a pressurized system allows you to stop the CO2 for maintenance purposes, which it doesn't. Don't bother, dig deeper and buy a pressure generator, or buy a fancier homemade CO2 generator.
