I used felt pliers which I attached to the ends to avoid scratching the metal on the ends of the keychain I was using. I found these and I'm glad I did. That makes a lot of things easier. At the ends of each side, the plastic pieces slide a bit so as not to scratch anything, and they sell replacements. They also give you a few extras.
