Review on Canon 50Mm Compact Macro Lens by Christine Jensen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Ideal for portraits

I never bought it and was intended for macro photography. I bought it because I have a Canon 50mm 1.4 and while it takes good pictures and has a fast focus, it misses focus far too often for me to be happy. I have a Canon 6D and my photography skills are slightly above average and I know my camera very well. I always focus on the eyes and yes, even with center focus and the Canon 50mm 1.4 sometimes doesn't focus exactly on the aperture and the center is kind of soft with noticeable light falloff in the corners and lens distortion, the last two of which aren't major Problem as I shoot raw and can easily be corrected in Lightroom. Now a Canon 50mm 1.4 which I bought brand new from Amazon a while back and treated with the utmost care knowing the USM motor is very delicate and will be damaged at the slightest jolt and if you spin the filter hard, you can also damage it. . So I protect it with a hood and a black and white (007m) UV filter. So that's my experience and I still like this lens and it's great for low light. I know some of you share my disappointment. I bought this lens strictly after reviewing Ken Rockwell's website and whether he was right. This lens is great for portraits and close-ups! It's a phenomenal 50mm 1.4 punch right out of the water, the autofocus is precise, wide open, the eyes are tactful, as is everything else that's sharp. Now I have to add that the autofocus is a bit slow and the depth of field is very shallow, so you have to be careful too, but it's very accurate. No chromatic arbitrage, no glare. Now I'm building on the fact that I only got the lens on Thursday and took it on Saturday to an early Mother's Day BBQ I did with the whole family and today I'm looking at and editing all the photos and they look amazing No lens hood is required with this lens as the lens element sits fairly deep in the body. I highly recommend it, I hope this helps, I know it would have helped me when I was looking for a reliable 50mm lens.
