. There is a screw that attaches the adapter to the valve body. The adapter creates a seal between the valve body and the cartridge. The problem is that the screw that holds the adapter in place is too tall (and also unnecessary) and can gouge the bottom plate of the stainless steel cartridge (see image), creating a leak between the adapter and the cartridge. If you have a leak, turn off the water, drain the water and remove the shower cartridge. If you find something that looks like the picture, call Delta and they will send you a FREE replacement. This saved me $40. By the way, there is no screw in the new adapter design, and once installed, you will be shocked at how much smoother the dial rotates. I also smeared silicone grease on the rubber seals and am very happy with the result.
