Works just like a regular fireplace lighter, except it uses a rechargeable battery instead of butane and creates a small plasma plume instead of a flame. Plasma looks like a small bolt of lightning between two terminals at the end and easily lights candles, which is clearly its main purpose. It can also ignite newspaper used as kindling, but it doesn't work directly on large items like charcoal. Basically it's a stick with a hot spot at the end. However, there are no security features. There's a handy button to turn it on and off, and another handy button to generate plasma. It's not safe for children at all. So if you have a curious child, this is not for you. On the other hand, if you don't have a toddler, it's easy to manage, which is a plus. My little one is 16 now, which is great for us.
