When you need to measure large objects, either by the edge or by the edge, they work like a charm. Not the most accurate but don't keep it off, 8 inches is a strong long lever arm. They measure hundredths of an inch, which takes a little getting used to - I always think it's thousandths like my other digital calipers. for turning, I think, but I often use them as planing gauges. I have to admit they are a bit unwieldy but that should pretty much be it, I can't think of a better way to make them.
