Basically I think it's insulation for the top of your oven so you don't burn what you put on it. When exposed to heat, the upper cabinets are deformed or damaged. This way you can constantly pile junk on top of your stove (none of my business) while still having adequate ventilation in the stove. This is an attractive board, not very thick but well designed. It is convenient to place plates while serving the contents of the oven. I'm not going to use it as a cutting board or garbage pile, but it's doable. Many complain about the price. You bought an expensive stove, what's the extra money for something you really like?
