When installing the clip into the first plank, I recommend driving the screw only partially into the joist to allow the next plank to attach the clip. When initially bolted down I had trouble getting the next board into the clamp due to the plastic tipping to one side or the other. The plastic should not reach the bottom of the carrier. After both boards are connected to terminals, go back and tighten the screw until it stops. Use a moderate torque so you don't overtighten the screw through the plastic and snap off the screw head. We also recommend attaching the boards with clamps at the ends first to get an even spacing across the board.
