I love it when you're looking for a different take. There aren't many shows about horse racing. Yes, the dialogue is difficult to follow as the characters use industry terminology. It got easier when I found a few phrases like: horse racing, handicap, horse entitlement,. Some of the characters have distinct accents, which is pretty realistic since there are a lot of immigrants in the industry. Nick Nolte's seedy old character mumbles like someone who's been on a ranch, trains horses, drinks, smokes and does what ranchers do. The race seemed realistic and exciting. I loved the cinematic skills and the music which made the race intense. The story is told slowly. We got to know the characters over several episodes. But the story doesn't get boring as each character is unique and the scenes are creatively presented. This is not for the viewer who insists on fast-paced action scenes, but for someone who listens to the details in conversations and likes to study personalities. The series was shortened so that the ninth episode ends with unresolved conflicts between the mafia leaders. I don't know if "Nine" was supposed to end, but it was still a dramatic, entertaining, and positive ending.
