Updated after a year of use. If the Miele designers wanted to improve this plush carpet cleaner, they had to consider two things. First, the wheels are practically useless. You simply pull the vacuum cleaner over the carpet. Please consider bigger wheels or at least more space for the bottom of the vacuum or maybe some kind of backpack. Secondly, while I have no complaints about the carpet instrument's work, it is difficult to change the settings. In my opinion it would be worth paying for a setup with controls on the handle that have the brush on and off. Even if it stops when it hits an obstacle, when it goes airborne it accelerates to very high speeds and then hits the carpet with all that excess energy when it goes down. It should either turn off or turn off when lifted to avoid damaging the carpet (not that I've actually seen any damage from it yet). Despite that, for all the reasons we gave in the original review, we still really like it and haven't noticed any signs of wear or damage of any kind after more than a year of use. Currently, each weekly full carpet cleaning costs about $18 (the cost is amortized over several weeks). The goal is for it to last at least long enough for that number to be less than $2. So far there is no reason to believe that this will not happen. We recently installed a Mohawk rug, very soft, with 1/2 inch tufts ("Refined Style"). The installers tried vacuuming it with two different vacuums, but neither worked: they just stuck to the floor. I was able to use our old one without the brush set to max height and it was awful. It felt like plowing the ground. So I bought this Miele $oft Carpet and tried it out for the first time today. First, the default "Soft Carpet" settings (one on the canister, one on the headboard) didn't work. The head stuck to the floor and when I turned the brush on it just stopped. The instructions suggested going beyond the SC settings in this case, so I turned my head to max SC+. With these settings, it was easy to vacuum our carpet with a brush. There is resistance when pushing/pulling the head, but not too much. The result looked clean (but it's a new carpet). Our old vacuum cleaner was very noisy, so quiet was an important goal. This vacuum is suitable. It's not quiet so you can hear the motor and brush, but it's not loud enough to be annoying (or, like many vacuums, to hurt). I like everything about it: its reliability; the fact that most tools fit neatly inside (except for the parquet tool); retractable cable. The head works well with most furniture, and other tools are always on hand in a pinch. For storage, part of the wand stands with a hose over the handle and the canister stands on end. Most controls are easily accessible. I'm not used to the canister model, so I found it a bit awkward to switch back and forth between the two active parts - I guess that's the concept of the canister vacuum. Also, I'm wondering if the wheels on the canister shouldn't be bigger to make it easier for the canister to move over soft carpet. Time will tell if the carpet comes out clean with the settings I had to use. Looks like he did a good job the first time. If anything negative comes up I will update this review. PS We really like this rug! It's almost like walking on the sand at the beach, only less wet. [UPDATED TO CHANGE SOME DETAILS]
