Short summary. My cat Jasper had no UTIs or struvite crystals. After taking the usual dose for 8 weeks, he developed a minor urinary tract infection and had no crystals in his urine. I doubled the dose, switched to wet food just to flush my bladder, and used prebiotics and probiotics. The infection cleared without antibiotics and the pH dropped (struvite crystals, which can cause a life-threatening blockage, dissolve in the lower pH). My cat Jasper has had chronic problems with UTIs for years. Cats that only eat dry food become dehydrated. You don't drink enough water. My cat's bladder was frequently infected, the pH of the urine was high, and struvite crystals were forming, potentially causing a life-threatening blockage. MARCH 2014 - Jasper had a UTI, struvite crystals, high urine concentration. I treated him with antibiotics and wet food once a day and after 14 days it was gone. Urine concentration still high and pH still high at 7.0 MAY 23, 2014 - STARTED CRANBERRY TABLETS and followed directions started taking Jasper 1/4 tablet per day (1 tablet per 40 lbs, 10 lbs. Cat) Continued wet feeding once a day July 15, 2014 - Jasper developed a very minor urinary tract infection. The vet doesn't think antibiotics are justified. The pH dropped from 7.0 to 6.5. Cranberry tablets were increased to twice daily (double dose) and the infection was treated with probiotics (Purina Fortiflora), prebiotics (Source Naturals FOS Fructooligosaccharides) and an all wet food diet. AUGUST 26, 2014 - Infection cured. At the double dose, the pH dropped from 6.5 to 6.0. Only with wet food did the concentration decrease slightly, but it still remained high. OCTOBER 18, 2014 - Stopped taking probiotics on August 26th, continued taking prebiotics and a double dose of cranberry tablets and no signs of UTI. I would give it 5 stars apart from the fact that Jasper developed a urinary tract infection and needed a double dose to heal. I will check again on HWI in 6 months and update my post.
