The clamp pivots under the rest of the assembly, then the mounting plate has a horizontal hinge and a vertical thumb hinge, and then another horizontal hinge. The pan and thumb screws are "marked" with notches that prevent them from moving even if the screw loosens a little. Heavier than you think seems really durable. To avoid damaging the paint, I attached it (using the four set screws from the bottom) to a 1/8" aluminum rod that I attached to the factory rails on the roof of my Sprinter van. Loosen the thumbscrew to rotate the antenna parallel to the roof for close-range locations. My WeBoost OTR cell phone booster antenna is slightly smaller than the hole in this mount but is within the tolerance of the washer and nut that came with it.
