I recently decided to buy a GPS for our family camper. I bought and returned 2 GPS units, a Rand Mcnally Palm V GPS and a laptop GPS. GPS on Palm V worked fine but wouldn't turn off. He was also very sensitive to tree cover and position in the car. Sometimes I couldn't find a solution. In a camper you can't do that at all. Then I bought a portable GPS navigator with Streetfinder software. The position and course will drift everywhere and the signal strength indicators will drift up and down no matter where the GPS is. I have to say that the Street Finder display on the laptop was great. I bet they don't have a good quality assurance program because of the low price. You're probably thinking: What does this have to do with the Garmin GPS12? I did a lot of research and found the GPS12 to be the perfect solution. It turns on and fixes the satellites directly after setup in less than 45 seconds! It works anywhere in the car - on the dashboard, on the seat, on the center console and in the back seat. It works everywhere in our camper. It connects to your laptop for a great display on your camper dashboard! The laptop offers a better mapping experience than more expensive GPS thanks to its larger display. I also hooked it up to my Palm V using Streetfinder software in both cases. Why connect to the palm? because it's got plenty of memory for storing maps, a larger display than most GPS units, and you can put your palm right on the dash for a nice, decently sized, backlit display. Marcosoft has a great navigation software suite in the palm of your hand. The best thing is that I can handle everything on my own by fishing, driving or hiking. The Garmin GPS12 works great and makes a good impression. The case has a high-quality finish, with a high-quality keyboard. I gave it a sub-perfect 5 because I think they should include a data cable or at least a cigarette lighter adapter.
