Thread does not match my floor lamp

I tried to repair the bottom of a floor lamp (made in China of course) with this product. Although the diameter of these rods appeared to be correct, they quickly twisted when screwed into the lamp. I'm not sure if it was an SAE or metric issue, but I suspect it was.
