This is a fantastic lens that can take great macro shots. The processing quality is good, the optics are very good. However, without image stabilization, you need plenty of light (a flash can be very helpful) and very steady hands (a tripod is very helpful) if you want to get good image quality at the maximum magnification the lens can achieve. As you work with these additional tools, I have no doubt that this lens will do amazing things for you. I mainly shoot by hand, so I had to work harder (but NOT smarter) to get good results. It's nice to note that you'll probably get better with practice, like I did. In addition to macro photography, this lens is also excellent for other types of photography. I took some sports photos indoors and was very satisfied. The ability to open to f2.8 means it performs better in the low-light gyms that often sag. As with other prime lenses, I just moved when I needed to be closer or further away. I know it's not always possible, but in this situation I went with the Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 - more light means faster shutter speeds and a clearer image. Others point out that this 100mm lens can also be used for portraits and I agree. When working with a crop sensor camera, I also get an extra 1.6x focal length, which can help with the pressure most people need when shooting portraits. I thought I would only use this lens for macro photography, but I ended up using it for more than that. I give the lens 4/5 stars simply because there is no image stabilization. It may not be fair to judge a lens for a feature it doesn't have, but by using longer focal lengths with IS I certainly wish this lens would break my obstinate refusal to use a tripod. Outside of macro photography, I did not overlook the presence of an image stabilizer. So if you plan on using the lens for more than just macro photography, you might not think you need an image stabilizer.
