Amazing product that fixed my squeaky stairs!

This product is amazing! My house has a 115-year-old staircase that creaks loud enough to wake the dead. I was looking online for options and was even considering tearing down the entire drywall in my basement to get to the stairs from below when I found this product. Although it's designed for floors (I think) it works just as well for stairs. The bottom line is hammering nails into the cheeks (the tree that holds up the entire staircase). For each step I drive a nail into each side of the stringer and then also into the riser at the front of the stairs in the middle of the step. This worked really well and solved 90-95% of the stair squeaks! It's an old staircase so it'll never be completely quiet, but it's a HUGE improvement. I ended up with two nails that didn't go deep enough before they broke, which was a bit of a hassle to fix, but since it kept my stairs from creaking I'm not too upset. I used a Dremel cutting bit to remove the extra screw from the ladder and then sealed the hole. The screws work pretty well and I was impressed by how small the remaining hole was (see photo)! From the nail holes you can see the putty holes but my staircase is far from perfect despite its age so everything fits me. If you put more effort than me into finding an exact color match for the stain, you could almost completely hide all the nail hole marks. -Use the "softwood" method - this gives you more control over when the screw will break, making you less likely to break prematurely and end up with a nail sticking out of the ground. Make sure you actually drill the stringer/beam. If you don't, the screw won't do anything to eliminate the squeak. It must be hooked to the stringer/beam to tighten the floor. I could actually hear my ladder "creak" as the screw did its job and tightened everything. You will need wood filler and stain/paint to touch up the floor afterwards

Pros
  • Hardwood Floor/NO Carpet Kit. The tool snaps the screw to the correct height for wood floors.
Cons
  • thin
